Its definitely a reasonable option. I bet a lot of people would consider it their best option, and they'd be right.

He said that his property allows him to source *most* of his needs. So what about the rest? He must import them. Which means he needs money to buy them. So how does he make money? Does he make something that others want? Is he close enough to a town so that he can sell his creations to people that want them?

I think it is a great option. If I had the opportunity I would be off grid...preferably in a 30 foot yurt...lol.

I've seen that video before, a couple years ago, as I recall.

To begin with what's needed is a mental adjustment to get started on living off-grid. Some initial investment and some case flow. All things that can be accomplished, some with little effort, some with major effort.

There are several off-gridders that I see post at The Oil Drum, some regularly some not so often. Two I can think of is one in northern CA and the other is in VA.

Another example, that I track pretty much daily cause of his great camera skills is John Wells of The Field Lab:

Life off the grid in the SW Texas desert. An experiment in sustainable living. NUMBERS AT THE END OF EACH BLOG POST: temp at 8PM,high temp, low temp, rainfall, wind conditions(CalmBreezyWindyGusty),pounds of food harvested

For a more unconventional approach there is The Earthship's of NM.
