Question: What do you think Donovan is talking about in his song Season of the Witch?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92HjH1GG3ro

To me it brings to mind not just Halloween but witchcraft, magic, mystery, pretense, things that are not what they seem, all possibilities of being [seeing outside, seeing inside], psychedelic vision.

The line 'Beatniks out to make it rich' fits in with this. I'm not sure what 'Rabbits running in the ditch' could refer to [getting away?]. Rabbits are associated with magic [as in pulling a rabbit out of a hat] but that might be a stretch. Oh, another thought just came to mind: the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland [going down a rabbit hole] who represents a mystery that Alice follows.

The main refrain 'You've got to pick up every stitch' seems to refer to seeing the big picture [as in weaving a tapestry, a dropped stitch produces a distortion or becomes a missing piece of the puzzle, a stitch in time saves nine or you miss something].

What do you think?

I think that the "season of the witch" represents times that are strange and unexplainable.

I like Vanilla Fudge's version as well. It's much darker in tone, and fits the mood of the song better. It's Track 7 on this MySpace album:

Vanilla Fudge is out of this world. They could make any song come from another dimension.

Donovan's original version is rather upbeat, as if he is having fun with it.

Our town his been hit with the swine ful. Because we are so small that means half of everyone probably has it. I didn't allow Chandler to trick or Treat this year. because he was born with 3 holes in his( heart vetricular septic defect), he is a risk for flu complications. So last night was kinda sad for us. My oldest child is 24. This is the first time in 23 years I haven't taken children out.
