default Chess, anyone?

Post by Grasshopper on Sun Aug 23, 2009 5:23 pm

Let's play a game of group chess!

Anyone can play, one move at a time, as either White or Black (you don't have to stay with one color!).

Chess is meant to be a slow game where moves are thought out, so it is a perfect opportunity to practice our 'pause and reflect' skills.

You need to know the rules of the game and how to do descriptive chess notation (see links below).

It would help if you have a chess set in front of you to see clearly what you are doing but this is not absolutely essential once you are familiar with the board layout.

We can also discuss anything about the game(s) here. Or make humorous or smart-ass comments. big grin

If you don't know how to play chess, with a little patience you too can learn!

Rules:

Notation:

cheers

OK, I'll start off the game with the first two and a half sets of moves and illustrate the format for notation:

Each set of moves occur in a numbered line,
White on the left, Black on the right.

1. P - K4, P - K4 (P=Pawn, K=King, 4=box in that chess piece's column from that player's perspective)

2, KN - KB3, QN - QB3 (KN=King's Knight, KB=King's Bishop, etc.)

3. QN - QB3, ...... (...... here means it is now Black's turn)

For continuity, quote or copy and paste all of the moves that have taken place before entering your move in your message, like so:

1. P - K4, P - K4
2, KN - KB3, QN - QB3
3. QN - QB3, ......

OK, Black, it's your move!

Hmm, my father taught me how to play chess when I was a kid, and I played it a lot, but it's been a long time. I'm not sure if I could do it without a chess board in front of me! Not sure about those notations, either...

The links can teach you how to play and about the notation. You can buy a cheap chess set for a few dollars. It might be fun, give it a try.

I might just have my kids give me a refresher course. Ya know you are old when your kids start teaching you. Laughing and rolling

I am revising this thread as some members have expressed an interest in playing. I'm sure you'll enjoy finally getting to play, Grasshopper! Very Happy
